Occidental at Xcaret Destination - All Inclusive

8/10 Good

"We've stayed here three times since 2003. This is a very nice all-inclusive resort, with a variety of activies for all ages. The food in the main buffet was very good. (It's challenging preparing food on a mass scale that appeals to everyone, and I think they do an excellent job.) In addition to the buffet, there are smaller "specialty" restaurants. These are better suited to couples and families with older children, I think. There is a small beach that is netted off from the ocean. This proved to be a major advantage on this occassion because just about every other beach in the Cancun area was blanketed with sargassum. There are three large swimming pools. (One change we noted on this trip is that the pools are now saltwater. In the past, they were freshwater.) One other change is that they DO have WiFi in the rooms. The description that Expedia provides is not correct. And if you are willing to spend 30-45 minutes listening to a sales pitch for a time share on the property, they'll give you a discount on some local attractions. Overall, I highly recommend this place."

"We absolutely loved the cleanliness of the hotel, room, and amenities. Everything was well maintained and our room was always cleaned. The staff was great, friendly and very welcoming. The entertainment was also great. The only reason I cannot give 5 stars is the food. The food was okay, the buffet never really had anything different like I’ve seen in other hotels in the area. One night we went to one restaurant 30 minutes prior to closing and our waiter seemed frustrated that we were ordering and even said I have to check if you can order. We ended up ordering but felt we were being rushed."

"Most of the staff were very friendly. The food was subpar - either too salty, too sweet or overcooked. Saw two people vomit in the pool area. Staff did a good job of cleaning it up, but gives you a good idea of the type of guests that stay there. Mostly a party scene."

"Rooms were clean, the staff was excellent, and the food was pretty good. The weather didn't do us any favors, and the beach/ocean water was pretty mid but that's not RIU's fault. We enjoyed our stay and will be recommending our friends to go."
