About Mumbai

Home to almost 20 million people and with a long history, the Indian city of Mumbai boasts a catalogue of tourist attractions. Decorative Hindu temples and British-era architecture, colourful markets, a world-class amusement park and gorgeous beaches are the chief draws for tourists. Mumbai is also the centre of the nation’s finance and business operations and the headquarters for the State Bank of India and the Rock Exchange.

Don’t Miss

The almost 30-metre-high Gateway Of India is Mumbai’s best known landmark and the departure point for ferries to Elephanta Island. The island’s seven caves are UNESCO listed and contain Shiva statues carved from rock. The famous Taj Mahal luxury hotel is at the back of the gateway and the vast museum collections of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya about 10 minutes’ walk.

Fort Business District and Mumbai commercial port are north of the gate and Colaba. Across the other side of the South Bombay peninsula, Chowpatty Beach is a unique location to take in Indian culture. A short walk up Malabar Hill to the Hanging Garden provides nice views of Mumbai.

Walkeshwar Temple and Banganga Tank are close to Malabar Hill. Mahalakshmi Temple and Navaratri Festival venue plus the Shree Swami Narayan Temple are north up the Arabian Sea coast. Esselworld Amusement Park is a little farther and at the back of Gorai Beach.

Restaurants and Bars

Mumbai has good dining and nightlife choices. Restaurants and street vendors selling snacks and sugarcane are everywhere. Even the smaller eateries serve up nicely spiced thali meals, tandoori and biriani curries, bhel puri rice and herbs. A lassi yoghurt drink is ideal after spending a day sightseeing. There is a selection of bars and nightclubs to choose from, with popular ones H20 The Liquid, a Hard Rock Café and the Barking Deer Brewpub.

Shopping

Shopping in Mumbai is an enjoyable experience. Popular shopping destinations for tourists are Colaba Causeway Market, Fashion Street, Chor Bazaar and Crawford Market. Chor is the best spot to pick up unusual items and souvenirs, antiques and collectibles. High Street Phoenix is one of quite a few shopping and lifestyle malls to open in Mumbai over the past 20 years or so. The many designer brands with outlets here include Burberry, Jimmy Choo and Calvin Klein.
