About Kuala Lumpur

The sprawling city of Kuala Lumpur is the federal capital and largest metropolis of Malaysia. Known also as KL, this city is a melting pot of cultures. Kuala Lumpur boasts some of Southeast Asia’s most impressive five-star hotels, shopping spots, colonial landmarks and entertainment districts. Throw in nearby natural splendours, and its little wonder why Kuala Lumpur is among the world’s most visited cities.

Don’t Miss in KL

Kuala Lumpur features plenty of intriguing and inspiring attractions that tourists simply must not miss.

Architecture in KL is simply breathtaking, with a host of colonial buildings that are guaranteed to excite engineering enthusiasts. In the city centre are such landmarks as the Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station and the old Colonial Secretariat, which is now the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Of course, what truly stands out in the KL skyline is the Petronas Towers – arguably Asia’s grandest skyscraper.

Museums line the streets of downtown KL. Even though there are dozens to choose from, two of the top museums in KL are the National Museum and the Islamic Arts Museum. The National Museum boasts plenty of exhibits that highlight the historical richness of Malaysia, including its vast, pre-colonial heritage.

Cultural landmarks are incredibly popular and important within KL. A trip to Petaling Street will take tourists to the renowned Chinatown district, where much of KL’s Chinese community operates. Little India is another fantastic cultural area that has lots of beautiful shrines, restaurants and shopping spots to experience.

KL Restaurants and Bars

Kuala Lumpur’s culinary culture is second to none. If tourists need to get their Western food fix, one of the many modern shopping malls will offer an array of choices.

However, while in KL, tourists should sample the delightful local cuisines on offer. Chinatown offers the best array of Chinese food in town, while Malay food are excellent in the Tunku Abdul Rahman and Kampung Baru districts. Of course, tourists should not miss an opportunity to sample the roadside stalls, or the delicious food in the traditional kedai kopi (coffee houses).

To experience nightlife in KL, the Golden Triangle boasts the largest cluster of clubs and pubs in the capital city, especially around Jalan P. Ramlee and Ampang Road.

Shopping in Kuala Lumpur

From the cheap to the best of luxury goods, shopping is one of Kuala Lumpur’s biggest attractions. There are more than 60 major shopping malls in the city, including some renowned names like the modern Berjaya Times Square, Pavilion and Suria KLCC mall, which are located within the Golden Triangle.

For a more local experience, tourists should head to Petaling Street in the Chinatown district to shop in the KL street markets.
