Smartphones are playing a key role in the evolution of several industries. Is hospitality next on the list?
According to USA Today, a Swedish hotel is launching a pilot program that will allow guests to use mobile check-in technology. Those staying at the Clarion Hotel in Stockholm in the program's four weeks will be able to enter guestrooms via their smartphones.
The news source notes that this could be a time-saving amenity for many business travelers, allowing visitors to skip the front desk and head straight to the room.
"Guests will be able to check in to the hotel and receive the hotel room key directly onto their mobile phones before arriving at the hotel," said a Reuters report. "On departure, the check-out process using the phone promises to be easy and stress-free."
There are also security perks, as hotel access can immediately be revoked if the guest loses their smartphone. This deters intruders from entering guestrooms with a lost or stolen "smart key."
InterContinental Hotels Group has already launched a similar pilot program in America at two of its Holiday Inn properties.
