Got the wrong food order brought to us on a couple of occasions, seems a break down in communication. Also had items missing from my breakfast despite it being on the menu and before we arrived I called the hotel to make restaurant reservations but was told that the hotel always accommodates hotel guests. This wasn’t the case as when we did arrive and tried to make reservations we were told the Orangery was fully booked and they couldn’t accommodate us, much to our annoyance. Lovely stay overall though and would recommend to others.

An impressive hotel, fantastic setting, convenient for the usual lakeland activities. Rooms and public areas were well appointed and clean. All the staff were helpful and personable. There there were a couple of weddings which meant other guests were excluded from rooms/areas for a time but there was no adjustment in the prices paid (for, in my view, full access to the hotels facilities). Restrictions included closure of the bar and Ramblers Bar/Candlelit Room. We found the menu in the Orangery to be, after 3 nights, a challenge; the menu seemed to us to be 'narrow'. One of our party preferred plain food so we did not go to the main restaurant where the menu was not suitable for that person (but would have been for others in our party) so we were stuck with the Orangery menu. No alternatives seemed to be available and, for the most part, the standard of the food was not high with undercooked chips, overdone steak etc but other meals were very tasty. We ate at a nearby restaurant at lunchtime and the quality of their plain food was superior and half the price. In the hotel, there was very little plain food on offer for our adult in the party. Our stay was not cheap and the food and bar costs are similarly expensive. We have stayed at this hotel on many occassions going back decades and felt, for the first time we did not get value for money, despite acknowledging that this is a premium hotel and we understand there is a price to pay for that luxury.

Fantastic
We had a small wedding and booked a room and dinner here with our family on the evening. The hotel and grounds are absolutely beautiful. We Booked a lake room which I highly recommend. Each and every one of the staff were friendly and polite, they all work extremely hard to ensure she have a comfortable stay.

Very pleasing second "holiday at home" stay here. Room was amazing with beautiful views over Ullswater and surrounding fells. Staff so welcoming and friendly. Unfortunately can't remember names too well but would like to give a special shout out to Lena(?) from the terrace bar/breakfast, Fenarc(?) from breakfast, and a young Scottish guy who has just started working for you (but whose name totally escapes me, sorry!) who served our afternoon tea in the Orangery. Didn't eat here in the evening but breakfast and afternoon tea lovely. Was too warm during our stay to do all the walking we had planned, but we fully intend to come back next year and look forward to our stay here again.

Stunning location
We stayed a couple of nights as it was a special birthday for my wife. We absolutely loved the hotel, the food and service in both restaurants was excellent and the view from our bedroom was fabulous. Will definitely stay again.

Enjoyable stay
The hotel and staff contributed to a very enjoyable stay and the views over the lake were very incredible at times. This was an excellent base for discovering other lakes and conveniently situated away from the crowds experienced at Windemere. We enjoyed some hiking directly from Glendinning and also from local Poolbridge and a deserted two and half hour trek through the fields near Bowness which felt like we were the 2 hobbits in the lord of the rings. The gardens were beautifully manicured and the restaurants catered for every need. Sundowners overlooking the lake went down really well. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Disappointing considering the cost of staying here
Stunning location on the shores of Ullswater but the hotel is dated and tired. I would rate the rooms and reception areas a low 3 star. The bathrooms are basic and small. The rooms don't have fridge / minibar. You pay a lot to stay here and apart from the view the hotel does not live up to the price nor expectations.
