I booked a room for my daughter who was attending a seminar at a Cape Institute. An hour after arriving, she called to tell me she had left & found another place to stay! I was shocked; I had met with the innkeeper 2 days beforehand & everything looked fine.
My daughter said the room was so moldy she started to have an asthma attack. She had a very difficult time opening the windows (she is a very strong athlete). When she did get them open, the screens did not fit in place.
She contacted the innkeeper, who does not live on the property, who came over & tried to be helpful. My daughter realized that there is no innkeeping staff there on a regular basis (never in the evening), the front door does not lock, and she was having trouble locking the door to her room.
The innkeeper insisted there was another couple there, but my daughter saw no one else there while she was there. The week before I was on the Cape, 3 mins. driving down the road to Pepper House & never once saw another car in the lot.
I found the innkeeper to be friendly & helpful, but that did not help with the strong smell of mold, a front door that doesn't lock, or the absence of any regular staff. When I spoke with her on the phone to get a full refund for the cost of the room, she was reasonable and refunded everything.
I think the innkeeper will have to make some basic changes to this property to make it comfortable to stay there.
