This was a marvelous place to stay with beautiful rooms and a deep and rich history. My wife is an academic and I write novels for Penguin/Ace, so we travel a lot both in the US and abroad. This was best room we've ever had anywhere, bar none. It was also shockingly affordable for what it was, a huge suite in a historic building with great views and a lovely breakfast.

Located 700 metres from Queens Gardens and the Suter Gallery, this historic Victorian five-suite hotel is one km from Nelson …More
We booked this hotel with no great expectations , although the advertising was impressive. But we were so impressed with this hotel, it more than lived up to brochure jargon. The setting is perfect , not central to Nelson and a nice drive in to town, easy to do. The view from our room in the main building was superb, with snow on the hills one day, to watching ducks quacking as they play around their purpose built nest home. Recommended.
We enjoyed great service in a country where service is on the decline.
The staff were friendly, respectful and engaging.
We stayed one night, had dinner with guests then breakfast in the morning.
Will recommend to friends and stay again.
We had a great 2 nights at the Cathedral Inn. The location is superb, just behind the cathedral and only a few minutes walk to cafes, restaurants, shopping etc. Room was immaculate and very comfortable. Hosts Sally and Neville were very helpful and gave us lots of tips about what to see and where to eat. The Thai restaurant they recommended was very good. Breakfast was excellent with a wide variety of choices for the cooked breakfast.
The Suter Gallery is nearby as are many galleries and craft shops. There is a lovely park nearby from where you can walk to the Centre of NZ - quite a climb but worth the view.
Can highly recommend the Cathedral Inn.
