Seattle Waterfront

Seattle Waterfront featuring a city and central business district
This three-kilometre waterfront stretch is one of Seattle’s foremost leisure and entertainment destinations. Soak up some of the atmosphere as you wander round.

Walk all the way west from the heart of town and soon you’ll reach Seattle’s western border, the waterfront alongside Puget Sound with its islands and mountains beyond. This three-kilometre coastline is home to shops, piers and public spaces where you can wander and savour the sea air or taste some of the freshly caught fish on offer all around.

Running beneath the raised Alaskan Way from Pioneer Square in the south to Centennial Park and Smith Cove Docks in the north, the Seattle Waterfront is alive with a remarkably rich heritage. It first grew in the late 1890s out of the Klondike Gold Rush, quickly emerging as the ‘Gateway to Alaska’. Over time as the city became a key trading city in its own right, its port complex grew and still today it remains as a fascinating attraction for visitors eager to see Seattle’s real life history outside the museums.

In the restaurants nestled all around the waterfront you can find fare to suit every taste and budget, from fast food to fine dining experiences, all while savouring the view across the water. The seafood here is of course legendary, as you would only expect from such a part of the world where fishmongers carry such a great reputation. Whether you’re looking to try some oysters, mussels, or even battered fish and chips, you’ll find it all along the boardwalk. The Northwest Copper River salmon is a particular local delicacy, and not to be missed if you’re in Seattle at the right time.

The waterfront is a jolly walk, and you can get from one end to the other comfortably in under an hour, but be sure to take some time out of your schedule to truly enjoy the shops and the art on offer here. Unique souvenirs are available from the shops and stalls, as are fascinating art pieces that may end up making the perfect memento of your visit to Seattle. The Seattle Aquarium is located here on Pier 59 too, with marine exhibits and touch pools well worth a visit.

Head for Myrtle Edwards Park where you can go biking or take a walk along the pedestrian trail. The Olympic Sculpture Park meanwhile lies adjacent and showcases some tremendous pieces of modern art that you can admire while enjoying a brisk walk.

Get on board the ferry to Bainbridge Island for a very special journey across Puget Sound, as well as a unique opportunity to see a remarkable view of all Seattle. Directly adjacent to downtown Seattle, the waterfront is easily accessible to the west of town.
