Once renowned as the home of the White Rajahs, Kuching is Sarawak’s largest and most cosmopolitan city. It is an ideal spot from which to explore the rest of Borneo, but the city itself is also well worth staying for a few days. Tourists can enjoy the sites of colonial neighbourhoods and modern attractions, not to mention plenty of cultural inspirations from across Asia. This melting pot of Malaysia is an ideal escape for adventure seekers.
When it comes to tourism in Kuching, the city boasts plenty of enticing landmarks, from busy cultural sites to nearby natural highlights.
Kuching is home to plenty of magnificent museums. They are clustered to the south of the city centre, and include a range of interesting cultural and historical exhibits. The Sarawak State Museum is the region’s oldest and most ethnically-inspired museum. The Sarawak Islamic Museum is another popular spot for those interested in culture, showcasing the famous replica of Prophet Muhammad’s pbuh.
There are several different religious sites worth visiting in Kuching. The fascinating Tua Pek Kong Temple is the jewel of the city’s Chinese cultural heritage. Also, the remarkable City Mosque features an incredible design and shouldn’t be missed. However, if tourists want to experience Islamic culture at its finest, a visit to the Masjid Jamek Mosque is recommended.
Several parks, both inside and near Kuching, are open for visits. The most popular spot in the city is the Kuching Waterfront, which can be visited by day or by night. Jong’s Crocodile Farm is only 30kms from the heart of the city, and Kubah National Park, with its beautiful walking tracks and waterfalls, lures thousands of visitors each weekend.
Restaurants and Bars
Eating out is an important part of local culture. Most dining spots and restaurants are rather cheap, so tourists won’t be breaking the budget when it comes to eating. Due to the uniqueness of some dishes, exploring Kuching’s culinary menu is an adventure in itself. Sarawak laksa and kolok mee are popular local dishes, as is the non-oily nasik aruk-style fried rice. When it comes to bars and clubs, several areas stand out, including Padungan Road, Jalan McDougall and Travillion.
Shopping in Kuching
The Main Bazaar near Kuching’s waterfront is where tourists will find the majority of the city’s handicraft items. These are ideal for souvenirs, and offer tourists a chance to experience local shopping life at its best. There are also malls dotting the city. The likes of Plaza Merdeka, Kuching Sentral and the lifestyle shopping mall, The Spring, are all excellent places to escape the heat of the city and enjoy a few hours of modern shopping delights.
