One of the main cultural hubs of the city, this plaza is home to ornate historical structures, a museum and an art gallery.

Chamberlain Square is situated right in the beating heart of Birmingham and plays a significant part in the life of the city. Admire the decorous buildings around you, and take some time to appreciate the fantastic artworks on display in the institutions here. When wintertime comes around, Birmingham’s excellent Christmas market is an absolute treat.

The square is named after Joseph Chamberlain, who was one of the most influential politicians in Britain for many years around the turn of the 20th century. A self-made businessman (very unusual for a public figure at the time), he began his career as Mayor of Birmingham.

The built design on Chamberlain Square is very pleasing to the eye. Check out Council House, home to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, which contains the largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite artworks in the whole world. Gaze up at the tall Corinthian columns of the Town Hall, or enjoy the Big Brum clock tower – so-called due to its similarity to the famous Big Ben tower in London. There are also a number of statues on the square, including one of Joseph Chamberlain and another of James Watt, the inventor of the steam engine.

Visit during December for the Christmas Craft Fair, when a festive atmosphere and some wonderful stalls packed with handmade gifts and decorations from all over the world come to the square. The Lord Mayor’s Show is another highlight during spring, with live music performances and workshops held. Check the Birmingham City Council website for times and specific information.

Chamberlain Square is in the heart of the city centre between important attractions such as Victoria Square, The Mailbox and Symphony Hall. Pleasant pedestrian streets run west to Brindley Place and east to the Bullring Shopping Centre. The square is well served by local bus, and is near to New Street and Snow Hill train stations.
