Swim, sunbathe, surf and snorkel at a popular free beach that lies in the shadow of a famous Dubai landmark.
Lie in the sun, enjoy a shoreline stroll and ride the waves on a surfboard at the popular Umm Suqeim Beach. This attractive sandy expanse is also known for its view of Burj Al Arab, the sail-shaped luxury hotel that’s one of Dubai’s most well-known sights.
While many of the city’s beaches are private and are attached to hotels or resorts, Umm Suqeim is a free public beach open 24 hours a day.
Take a break from sunbathing and relaxing in the sand and go snorkeling in the Gulf. The water is clear and you may be able to see starfish, sea urchins, crabs and many other types of marine life.
Umm Suqeim Beach’s waves and warm water are popular with surfers from October through April, the best surfing months. Rent a board from the Surf Dubai surf school situated on the beach and head out into the swells. The school provides lessons for beginner and intermediate level surfers. Bring your own food and drink with you as there are no cafés or restaurants on the beach. Alternatively, visit the café in Umm Suqeim Park across the road. During weekdays the park is only open to women and children. You will also need to bring your own beach umbrellas. The only beach facilities here are showers, changing huts and a sheltered area.
The beach can get crowded during the day, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. If you want to avoid the crowds get here early in the morning.
Located in western Dubai, Umm Suqeim Beach is approximately 10 miles (16 kilometres) from the downtown area and is easily reached by car and public transport. There is car parking in the surrounding streets and the nearest metro station is First Gulf Bank on the Red Line.
