This hamlet is best known for the Hauppauge Industrial Park, the largest industrial complex east of the Mississippi, with 1,300 companies and more than 55,000 workers. Nearby, the Nissequogue River flows from Caleb Smith State Park to the sound, creating a habitat for a range of bird species. South of town is the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, created by Central Park designer Frederick Olmstead Law.
