Downtown Los Angeles Travel Guide

Los Angeles
Downtown Los Angeles
Once renowned for its busy streets and heavy pollution, the bright lights of downtown LA is a destination reborn, bursting with vast open green spaces.

Downtown LA is bursting at the seams with culture, life and energy. From the breath-taking beasts and dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum to Chinatown’s exotic tastes and temples, this lively area has something to offer visitors of all ages.

Spanning 21 square kilometres, the area is divided into 16 districts, which include among others, the Fashion District, the educational institutions of Figueroa Corridor and the cultural delights of Bunker Hill.

With its majestic skyline, Downtown LA is a marvel of architectural achievement and splendour. From Union Square’s fusion of art deco and Spanish colonial revival to the stainless steel curves of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the area is studded with stunning architecture that will turn your head skywards every time.

For budding gastronomists, downtown LA has all the spices of the orient mixed with all the sights of the Far East. Explore the eclectic enclaves of Chinatown, Olvera Street and Little Tokyo, and sample tastes from around the world, from sushi to taquitos or maybe some delicious sizzling sliced eel.

The Frank Gehry-designed building plays a major role in LA’s vibrant performing arts scene. The building is host to some of the most prestigious artists and orchestras in the classical music industry, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Natural History Museum is a must-see for the kids, offering an interesting insight into prehistoric creatures. The California Science Centre is also a great way for the younger visitors to explore how the planets and the solar system work through a wide range of interactive exhibits and shows.

Despite its reputation as an urban jungle, Downtown LA is bursting with green spaces and open lawns. Put your feet up for a few hours on the hillside at Angels Knoll or on the rooftop of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, where you will find a beautifully kept public garden.
