About Udaipur

Voted one of the best cities in the world to visit, Udaipur is a romantic city that is famous for its palaces, lakes, temples, forts and gardens. It is a city of white buildings and colourful clothing that sits in the slopes of India’s Aravalli Range, having numerous small alleyways that lead down to the many lakes and ghats.

Don’t Miss

Udaipur City Palace is the most visited attraction in the city, and is a large complex of palaces, museums and gardens. It is a beautiful complex that rises 30 metres above Lake Pichola and is made entirely out of marble and granite. The luxurious Fateh Prakash Palace is located within the Udaipur City Palace.

The artificial Fateh Sagar Lake was constructed in 1876 and boasts three small islands, with the largest being home to Nehru Park. Lake Pichola is also an artificial lake in Udaipur that was created in 1362 and is home to the lavish Taj Lake Palace that sits on an island and is accessible by speedboat. The hotel has been voted as the most romantic property in India and has been used in numerous films, including the James Bond film Octopussy.

Around 150 metres from the City Palace lies the Jagdish Temple, an Indo-Aryan architectural style Hindu temple that is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Apart from the palace it is Udaipur’s most visited attraction, boasting carvings of Vishnu and Krishna. Sukhadia Circle is also popular, especially for families.

Restaurants and Bars

Udaipur is known for its lentils and rice, onion/flour balls and dumplings with curry. The main food of choice is Rajasthani and Gujarati cuisine like roti, daal and vegetables, though Western options are available. One of the best restaurants in the city is at the Trident, Udaipur, while the rooftop of the Jaiwana Haveli is a fantastic place to enjoy a drink. Visitors who prefer to eat at a known fast food chain should head to the LakeCity Mall.

Shopping

Udaipur is famous for its miniature paintings, pottery, jewellery and wooden toys. There are a few bazaars where visitors can pick up bargain gifts and souvenirs, as well as plenty of shops for purchasing local handicrafts, clothing and antiques. There are also three modern shopping malls in the area that house stores featuring known brands like United Colors of Benetton, Puma, Nike and Adidas.
