Bristol Zoo
Go on a discovery of land and sea animals from all corners of the globe at this superbly presented zoological park.

Visit Bristol Zoo (officially Bristol Zoo Gardens) and come face-to-face with more than 7,000 animals made up of over 400 species. Here, indoor and outdoor enclosures are spread around a stunning 12-acre (5-hectare) garden and replicate the natural habitats of the resident animals. Opened in 1836, Bristol Zoo was one of the world’s first ever zoos. Its conservation programme has aided in saving some 175 species from extinction.

Paved and wooden pathways wind around the zoo’s exhibits, lakes and tree-shaded lawns. Meet Asiatic lions, red pandas and a family of western lowland gorillas. Observe mischievous meerkats from a lookout and spot exotic creatures from Brazil. At the Seal and Penguin Coasts, African penguins and South American fur seals play around saltwater pools and waterfalls.

Get an insight into the marine animal kingdom as you observe some of the 115 colourful fish species in the Aquarium. See frogs, lizards, snakes and tortoises in the Reptile House. In the Twilight World you get the chance to experience the life of nocturnal animals. Bird enthusiasts will love watching the colourful winged critters from Southeast Asia in the Forest of Birds.

Time your visit to coincide with animal feedings. Gorillas, lemurs, otters and penguins are among those included in the programme. Live out your dream of being a zookeeper and enjoy personal interactions with gorillas and lions.

Visitors of all ages will have fun at ZooRopia, a raised adventure rope course and zip line with views of swinging monkeys and primates. Grab a bite to eat at the zoo’s café and fast food kiosks. Alternatively, bring your own food and drink and set up a picnic on the grassy lawns.

Located in the Clifton neighbourhood, the zoo is about 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) from Bristol City Centre. Clifton Down train station is a 15-minute walk away. Parking is available on site for a fee.

Bristol Zoo is open daily, except for Christmas Day. Discounts are available when booking online via the zoo’s official website. Some activities have additional charges.
