About Beijing

Bustling Beijing is best known as China's national capital and second most populous city as well as the 2008 Olympics host city. Skyscrapers and wide streets have replaced several of the narrower hutongs which once dominated Beijing's streets, but there are still centuries of history to be found at Tian'anmen Square, Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. Tourists can even travel to the legendary Great Wall of China near Beijing's outskirts.

Don’t Miss

Dongcheng is the district containing most of Beijing's most historic landmarks, including Tian'anmen Square and the 1,000 Forbidden City buildings. Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and the Great Hall of the People are both situated near Tian'anmen, the world's biggest public square. The Temple of Heaven stands in the Chongwen district, while the marble Marco Polo Bridge is over eight centuries old.

Xicheng, the district to the west of Dongcheng, is home to the National Centre for Performing Arts, Beihai Park, and Beijing Zoo. Most of the 2008 Olympics venues are located in the Chaoyang District near the 798 Art Zone, whle the Old and New Summer Palaces are the best known attractions in the northwest Hadian District.

Beijing's long list of museums includes the China Science and Technology Museum, the National History Museum, and the National Art Museum of China. Visitors may also enjoy Beijing Amusement Park, Beijing Botanical Garden, or the Beijing Planetarium during their stay in China's capital city. It takes no more than an hour to reach the Great Wall of China by bus from Beijing.

Restaurants and Bars

Peking duck is undoubtedly Beijing's best known signature dish, but China's capital is filled with plenty more renowned international restaurants and Western fast food chains. Visitors who want to sample the local jincai cuisine, however, can choose from numerous dishes made with tofu, noodles, or dumplings called shuijiao. The side dishes most likely to accompany Peking duck are bean paste, pancakes, and chopped spring onions. Beijing's leading culinary districts are Sanlitun, Dongzhimen, Wangfujing, and the more affordable Wudaokou area of the city's university district.

Shopping

Qianmen, Dashilar, Xidan, and Wangfujing Dalie are Beijing's biggest shopping districts, but modern shopping centres and bustling outdoor markets can be found in nearly every section of China's capital. No Beijing market, however, is larger than the one which takes place near Dongsanhuan Nanlu and attracts over 50,000 people every weekend. The Jianguomenwai Dajie's Xiushui Silk Market is also worth browsing, but shoppers should always haggle and watch out for counterfeit goods at all Beijing markets.
