This majestic venue is the heart and soul of Orange County’s performing arts community.
In 1986, the Orange County Performing Arts Centre opened in the suburb of Costa Mesa with the aim of providing world-class entertainment in Orange County. Today known as the Segerstrom Centre for the Arts (in recognition of the generosity of the local Segerstrom family), the centre continues to strive towards this aim, playing host to hit Broadway musicals, dance performances and grand orchestral concerts. In addition to the international artists who visit here, the Centre is also home to the celebrated Pacific Symphony, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and the Pacific Chorale, who all perform regularly.
Remodelled in 2003, the sleek state-of-the-art complex that houses the Segerstrom Centre is as impressive as the performers it hosts. The range of venues on offer here means it is the perfect place for everything from a five-act opera with full chorus and orchestra, to intimate cabaret-style performances. And you won’t just find classical music here—rock fans crowd into the theatre for standing-room only gigs.
The outdoor Arts Plaza regularly hosts free community performances and is transformed into a makeshift cinema in summer, when the weekly Movie Monday Series is held. Classic films are projected onto the walls of the nearby Concert Hall and visitors bring along chairs, rugs and picnics and set up on the outside lawn. Contact the Centre before your visit to make sure the films are running and check the programme ahead of time.
To take a peek behind the scenes, join one of the free guided tours exploring the backstage area of the Centre. These provide commentary on the history and architecture of this cultural hub. And if you want a pre- or post-show bite, you’ll find Leatherby’s Café Rouge fine-dining restaurant on site—bookings are recommended.
