We loved the preserved historic district & the Central Park with Japanese & rose gardens plus the Arboretum. There were not too many high rises, but lovely, walkable downtown as well as pretty neighborhoods, parks, & restaurant choices.

San Mateo in generally very safe, but if you want to walk, I'd walk in the day. Also, you won't find anything to do or look at walking around that area as it's all apartments. It's for utility and right off freeway location.

Nice area but as in any city be cautious. The best part is the Hillsdale Mall.
"Rooms were fully stocked with amenities and with extra towels. Check in took little bit but everything else was great. Comfy lobby to hang out by the fireplace. "
"everyone in housekeeping friendly as well as the front desk. The restaurant lacks of a friendly host. They did not allow me to ask for coffee at the bar nor wait inside for a table with my kids on a different day.
The hotel is beautiful and very well preserved"
"Good location, easy to get around! Lots to do in the area. Room was clean. Staff friendly. The doors are loud to close could hear our neighbors coming and going and the people above us were very loud walking around as we tried to sleep! Breakfast had a good flow with the amount of people that were there was able to quickly get seated. Overall good stay "
