Honolulu Zoo

Honolulu Zoo featuring signage and zoo animals
A colourful spot that is home to over 1,200 different animals, not to mention some drawn from the world's rarest species.

From flamingos and scores of other tropical bird species, to giant reptiles like Komodo dragons, crocodiles and iguanas, and even giraffes, meerkats, cheetahs and aardvarks, here at this impressive 42-acre site you'll find all kinds of marvellous creatures.

When you arrive at the grounds of the Honolulu Zoo, you'll get to explore three main areas: the Tropical Forests, the Pacific Islands and the African Savannah. Around the zoo, you'll come face to face with over 250 different species of mammal, reptile and bird, all of which are well cared for in spaces designed to resemble their own diverse mix of natural habitats. Among the highlights well worth seeing are the nenes (endangered geese native to Hawaii) as well as the hoary-looking Galapagos tortoises. The Asian elephants are a spectacular sight too, which you’ll find and be able to get up close to in their own large enclosure. In the Zoo Gardens meanwhile, you'll also find some of Hawaii's fascinating flora and fauna.

Visit the central area of the zoo if you're bringing any youngsters. Here, they can explore the “Keiki” (Children's) Zoo, where they can interact with all kinds of animals, including tortoises, llamas and even pot-bellied pigs. Nearby, they can also have fun in the playground and visit the popular tiger enclosure.

If you wish to bring your own food and soft drinks, you are more than welcome. You can also purchase lunch at the Kapahulu Market, where you'll find stalls offering an array of foods. You can even come back for refills at any time if you buy a drink here.

During the summer months, the zoo plays host to a range of concerts and other events in the evenings. Have a look at the zoo's website to find out what's on while you're in the region.

Located inside Kapiolani Park between Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, the Honolulu Zoo is open every day with the exception of Christmas. It is cheap to enter as well as to park your car on the grounds. You can also find free parking spaces at the Waikiki Shell stadium.
