Harry S. Truman Library and Museum

Harry S. Truman Library and Museum which includes heritage elements and interior views

Delve into the family and professional life of the 33rd president of the U.S. via artwork, storyboards, multimedia exhibits and original artifacts.

Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is among several attractions in Independence dedicated to one of the city’s most famous sons. Opened in 1957, the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum strives to preserve the legacy of the former head of state. Browse a selection of 32,000 artifacts to discover exhibits that retrace Truman’s life from his humble upbringing on a farm to his presidential tenure.

Greeting you in the lobby is a mural by Thomas Hart Benton called Independence and the Opening of the West. It features Pawnee tribespeople, pioneer wagons, settlers and trappers and portrays a conceptual image of the establishment of Independence. The permanent exhibition Harry S. Truman: His Life and Timespresents an overview of Truman’s childhood up until his death in 1972. Among other things, it traces his boyhood years in Independence, life on a farm in Grandville, military service and rise through the political ranks.

Harry S. Truman: The Presidential Years looks at major events that took place while he was president. Watch an introductory video to the museum’s protagonist directed by Charles Guggenheim. Learn about Truman’s involvement in events such as the bombing of Hiroshima, the Cold War and the recognition of Israel’s independence. Don’t miss the replica of the White House’s Oval Office.

Check the schedule of temporary exhibits. One example is a chronicle of Truman’s decision to refurbish the White House in 1948. There is also a series of online exhibits available to view via the library’s official website. These artifacts and stories are ideal for those with a keen interest in American political history.

The library is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of Historic Independence Square. Get here by catching a public bus or walking for about 20 minutes. If you drive, use the free on-site parking.

Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is open daily and has an admission fee. Tours for groups of 15 visitors or more can be arranged by prior request. These tours have a fee. Contact the library if you wish to use the research rooms.
