Spylaw House, Colinton Dell. House built in 1773 as the home of snuff manufacturer and philanthropist, James Gillespie. Remains of the snuff-mill, powered by the Water of Leith, are incorporated into the rear. The snuff was sold from a shop run by Gillespie's brother in Edinburgh's High Street. 1338585 When he died in 1797, Gillespie, a life-long bachelor, left a fortune to found "a Hospital for the Maintenance of Aged Men and Women, and a Free School for the Education of Poor Boys" in Edinburgh.

Room was clean and tidy, few things could have been better. Probably needs a lick of paint, and door frame in bathroom replacing, wood is falling apart. Cammy on reception was nice, gave us info about buses etc, all helpful during our stay.
