How to get around Hawaii
Once you arrive at Kailua-Kona Airport, the best way to get around the island is by bus. Although taxis are available, they are unregulated and so prices vary.
Hiring a car is another excellent way to explore Hawaii.
You may wish to explore some of the other islands making up this striking volcanic archipelago, perhaps with a trip to Oahu, which is home to the capital Honolulu and the infamous Pearl Harbour.
While ferry services run between Hawaii Island and some of its smaller neighbours, the best way to travel to Oahu is with Honolulu Airlines. Flight time is around 45 minutes.
Things not to miss in Hawaii
Hawaii is extremely diverse. On the northern island of Oahu you’ll find the bustling capital, Honolulu. Nearby is the popular resort of Waikiki, where a popular past time is hitting the waves with a surfboard.
Nearby Kauai, known as Garden Island, is famed for its tropical rainforests and crashing waterfalls – ideal for a spot of hiking or for wildlife enthusiasts. Of course, it’s not every day you’ll be holidaying on an active volcano, so you shouldn’t miss a trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Here you can see active lava, the lifeblood of the Earth, flowing directly beneath your feet!
Tips for travelling in Hawaii
While part of the USA, Hawaii’s tropical location and Polynesian heritage gives it a very different flavour from the mainland.
There are a few etiquette tips to bear in mind. For instance, in the event somebody should offer you a lei (a flower garland) you should always accept it with gratitude. It is also good to remember the words ‘Aloha’ (used for both hello and goodbye) and ‘Mahalo’ (thank you).
Making the effort to learn even just a little Hawaiian will go a long way with the locals and this can only make your experience more enjoyable.
