About Ximending

The district of Ximending is one of the most commercialised areas of Taipei. Renowned as the ‘Harajuku’ of Taiwan, this magnificent neighbourhood is located in the northwest area of Wanhua. It has become synonymous with shopping since the Ximending Pedestrian Zone was established. It is also thriving in rich history which can be seen through many of its fascinating attractions.

Don’t Miss

One of Ximending’s most famous attractions is the Red House Theatre built in 1908 during Japanese occupation of Taiwan. Originally, the building was used as a market and it was later transformed to a theatre in 1945. Inside the first floor of the theatre showcases the history of the landmark and features a lovely little café. The theatre itself regularly hosts shows and performances.

As part of a row of shop houses along Chengdu Road, the fascinating Mazu Temple looks unassuming from the outside. However, once tourists walk inside, they are greeted by a beautiful and historic religious site. It has been standing since the mid-1700s and each year it hosts an illustrious ceremony to its deity the Mazu Goddess.

Restaurants and bars

Both modern and traditional dining options are available in Ximending. The night market is an interesting dining spot with some truly magnificent and cheap cuisine. The pork sausage, papaya milk, fried chicken, and baked potato snacks are among the most popular dishes here. Japanese, Chinese, European, and American restaurants can also be found along and off Chengdu Road. Shopping and dining continues into the late night, but there are also bars, pubs, and karaoke venues that entertain visitors each night too.

Shopping

Shopping is the main attraction in Ximending. Each month, more than three million shoppers flock to this commercial area. Plenty of Japanese culture vendors sell anime and manga comics, not to mention Japanese-inspired clothing and accessories. Several busy department stores operate here too including Eslite 116, Wanguo Department Store, and Shizilin Square.
