Port Arthur Historic Site featuring château or palace, building ruins and heritage elements
Experience wonderful scenery, fascinating histories, native wildlife and rich cultural treasures when you vacation in the southern parts of Tasmania.

Art, culture, history and nature: Southeast Tasmania has lots of ways to captivate visitors. The wild and picturesque region encompasses mountains, an expansive wilderness landscape, historic sites and nature reserves. Discover 19th-century penal colonies, hike to mountain peaks and sail to offshore islands.

Enjoy sightseeing in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. Visit the Museum of Old and New Art and view collections in its subterranean levels. See Tasmanian fine and decorative art at the Narryna Heritage Museum and tour Parliament House. Unwind in restaurants and wine bars at Constitution Dock. Also located on the waterfront is the Lark Distillery and its tasting room.

The city is surrounded by wilderness that incorporates several mountains. Hike or mountain bike to the top of Mount Wellington for majestic views of the area.

Pick up insights into Hobart’s early days as a penal colony. See traces of its convict past at Cascades Female Factory where thousands of women and children were imprisoned. Drive to the Port Arthur Historic Site, about 62 miles (100 kilometers) south of the city. Over the years, it has been a penal settlement, a shipbuilding yard and a refuge for infirm prisoners.

Take a boat across the harbor to the Isle of the Dead cemetery where some of Port Arthur’s past residents are buried. Then check out the Coal Mines Historic Site, Tasmania’s first operational mine.

During your drive to Port Arthur you will pass the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Come back here for animal encounters with wombats and brushtail possums.

Get around to other cities and towns in the region. Rent a rowboat for a journey along the Coal River in Richmond. Spend time in New Norfolk, known for its colonial buildings and heritage gardens.

Step off the mainland to explore some of Tasmania's islands. Sail from Oyster Cove Marina in Kettering to Bruny Island. Observe native wildlife at Bruny Island Neck Game Reserve.

Traveling to southeast Tasmania involves a flight into Hobart Airport from mainland Australia. Once you land, rent a car to discover the gorgeous scenic attractions and historical sites at your leisure.
