If fishing, swimming, boating, hiking or wildlife are among your ingredients for a dream vacation, head straight to this lovely coastal town.

Stay in Sanctuary Point and make the most of its scenic location on the shores of St. Georges Basin, an inland body of salt water that offers an ideal location for a wide range of watersports. When you want to exchange one astonishingly beautiful view for another, drive to nearby Jervis BayOpens in a new window, a coastal area known for its gorgeous white-sand beaches and diversity of land and marine wildlife.

Sanctuary Point is fairly small, with a population that fluctuates in size but remains well under the 10,000 mark. Despite this, it is well served by tourist accommodations, malls and stores and other amenities. Explore the beautiful local landscapes during the day, then spend your evenings enjoying the laid-back small-town vibe at one of the restaurants in town or at St. Georges Basin Country Club, which also has an 18-hole golf course.

Get to know the town and the surrounding countryside by walking or biking its roads, following them out onto the trails that lead to the beach. Take to the waters of St. Georges Basin in a sailboat, canoe or kayak, or take things up a level by windsurfing. This is also a favorite spot with anglers. Rent tackle in town or join a guided tour that will lead you to the very best spots.

Drive to Jervis Bay in less than an hour. This striking area of New South Wales is home to beaches that must be seen to be believed. These include beautiful Hyams BeachOpens in a new window, which holds the Guinness world record for the world’s whitest sand. Head south to Booderee National Park, a beautiful protected area that is home to a wealth of animals, including echidnas, humpback whales, fur seals and a huge array of birds.

Rent a car and drive along the coast from SydneyOpens in a new window to reach Sanctuary Point in 3 hours. Alternately, fly into nearby Jervis Bay Airport. Pick from a wide range of accommodations, but remember that you won’t be spending much time in your room, given how beautiful the world outside is in this part of New South Wales.
