This engrossing museum is packed with ancient Egyptian artefacts; jewellery, hieroglyphs and the odd mummy.

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum possesses one of the biggest collections of Ancient Egyptian artifacts in the United States. It began with a single statue, and today has over 4,000 exhibits. The building itself is a vast Egyptian-style complex, which adds to the magic of the experience. Marvel at the creativity and ingenuity of these ancient people, and at the fact that so much of their work still survives.

Upon entering the museum, take time to admire the lobby, created in the style of an Egyptian temple. The exhibits are divided into themed sections. A good place to start your tour is at the Start out at Burial Practices, Afterlife and Mummies! exhibit. Here, the intricate, often gruesome ritual of mummification is explained. Exhibits include canopic jars, which once contained internal organs after mummification, a funerary stele (commemorative tablet), and, of course mummies (including a mummy of a baboon!).

Move on to Gods and Religion, where you'll learn about mystical deities such as Isis, the Mistress of Magic. In the Kings and Pharaohs section, find out how rulers of the time managed to transform themselves into living gods. Also discover how some kings (such as Ramses I, first king of the 19th Dynasty) were adopted by childless fathers, in order to continue the lineage.

The Daily Life, Trade and Neighbours exhibition focuses on the role of everyday Egyptians. Peruse the numerous well-preserved objects, including pots and jars, household amulets, and a senet board. Of all the museum's exhibits, it's this one which brings you closest to experiencing how life in ancient Egypt would have been.

After exploring the museum, wander round the surrounding grounds and take a few snaps of the building's imposing exterior. The gift shop is ideal present fodder for history buffs and children. In addition to its permanent collections, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum lays on rotating exhibits and special events. Consult the website for details.

The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is located in the centre of San Jose. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, barring holidays.
