The city’s origins date back to 1845, when Rivas was incorporated into Vaciamadrid. Both towns were destroyed during the Civil War as they were located on the front, and in 1954 the General Directorate of Devastated Regions reconstructed them as a single city. It was then that Rivas-Vaciamadrid was taken as the official name of the municipality.
Most of the municipal area is integrated into the Sureste Regional Park, a protected area spanning more than 115 square miles. The site lies in the south-east of the Madrid region, along the lower courses of the Rivers Manzanares and Jarama, and is home to the calm waters of the Campillo lagoon. On its banks, you’ll find the El Campillo Environmental Education Centre, where you can see some of the archaeological findings of the area.
