Bloomsbury is a district of central London that exudes an esteemed academic culture while maintaining a village-like charm. It’s a sophisticated area characterized by its educational institutions, green spaces and museums. Bloomsbury is famous for its acclaimed honorary residents such as Charles Darwin, Karl Marx and Virginia Woolf. Today, it attracts a mix of students, literature enthusiasts and thinkers.

A major attraction of the area is The British Museum. Discover a fascinating collection of art and archaeological objects that span some 7,000 years. A major highlight is the world’s most comprehensive exhibition of Egyptian antiquities. The museum opens daily and admission is free, making it a must-see.

Experience the area’s educational heritage by strolling amid the buildings of admired institutions, most notably the University College of London. Spot displays of endangered and extinct animals at the Grant Museum of Zoology. Learn about the life of the Nile Valley at The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. Both museums are free of charge.

Set aside some time to relax in Bloomsbury’s collection of picturesque squares. Framed by handsome terraced houses, Bloomsbury Square is one of London’s oldest squares. Admire the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses that overlook Russell Square. The square’s tree-shaded lawns are ideal for enjoying a picnic on sunny days.

Literature lovers will rejoice in the opportunity to rummage in the many bookstores in the area Skoob Books stocks over 50,000 secondhand books. Browse African, Asian and Middle Eastern art at the Brunei Gallery. Catch a comedy, dance or music performance at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

Visit one of the many traditional pubs, which further enhance the area’s village ambiance. Sample artisanal foods and products from around the world at the Bloomsbury Farmer’s Market. It takes place on Thursday at Torrington Square.

You can find Bloomsbury toward the southern edge of the London Borough of Camden. Several London Underground stations are located around the area, including Euston Square, Goodge Street, Russell Square and Tottenham Court Road. Public buses also stop here throughout the day and night. Bloomsbury is bordered by Covent Garden to the south and Soho to the southwest.
