Nestled in a deep ravine between two towering cliffs, the Deep Valley of the Mills (Il Vallone dei Mulini) is a hidden gem in the truest sense of the word. Situated in the heart of Sorrento, just a stone’s throw from the central Piazza Tasso, this old abandoned flour mill is enchanting day or night and is a must-see for anyone visiting this region of Italy.
Flanking the edge of the historic old town, the Deep Valley of the Mills is a fascinating site that draws a variety of sightseers, from archaeologists to photographers and casual visitors alike.
Two ancient streams, Casarlano-Cesarano and Saint Antonino, dissect the valley floor creating a natural shelf on which the atmospheric ruins of this old mill are situated. Eagle-eyed visitors will spot the adjacent sawmill and public washhouse through the dense mangle of ancient brickwork and creeping vegetation.
Originally constructed around the 10th century, the mill ground wheat for a thousand years until it was abandoned sometime in the 19th century due to an untenable rise in humidity. Interestingly, the gorge now lends itself to a unique microclimate which encourages the growth of lush foliage. Note the way the dark green fern crawls across the roof of the mill slowly asphyxiating the crumbling ruins.
Although climbing down into the steep gorge is not recommended, visitors can still get a great street-level view from Via Fuorimura. This is an amazing vantage point so make sure you have your camera to hand. To really get the most out of this view, bring a small pair of binoculars.
Time your visit around mid-morning to see the ruins in their best light. For an alternative aspect, head here as darkness descends, for at night the mill is hauntingly illuminated and casts eerie shadows across the yawning gorge. This is definitely one photo opportunity you won’t want to miss.
