• Travelling on a plane can be a cruisy experience if you pack the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as a toothbrush and lip balm, a fresh set of clothes and a good book. Secondly, leave space in your carry-on bag for your electronic devices, chargers, medications and maybe a cosy neck pillow as well. Lastly, remember to take your passport, travel docs and your bank cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) won't be allowed on. Sharp or pointed objects, like your precious pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosols and gasoline, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• Your aim here is to be as comfortable as you can. Choose flat, closed-toe shoes, dress in loose, breathable clothing and don't forget to bring a jacket in case you get cold in the cabin.
• You're probably aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression socks and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

The answer is simple — be organised. We've pulled together some helpful hints for a speedy trip through security. Look out Pompei, here you come:

• Your boarding pass and travel ID will need to be inspected by airport security. Keep them someplace accessible so you don't hold up the line.
• Next up, both you and your carry-on luggage must be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings like your belt, jacket and earphones will be required to go through the machine.
• All electronic gadgets, including your laptop and phone, must also be scanned separately.
• Travelling with a new cologne or perfume? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-close bag, you're allowed to bring it with you in your carry-on bag.
• There's a chance you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp objects to come on board with you. If you must bring these kinds of items, put them in your checked luggage.
