Cabo Rojo Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Corozo Salt Flats, Punta Jagüey & Playa Santa
Discover one of the most scenic parts of Puerto Rico in the Cabo Rojo region, known for its striking landscapes and alluring, picturesque beaches.

Locals love the region of Cabo Rojo, the “Red Cape.” A spectacular coastline, seldom troubled by tourist crowds, surrounds a landscape of nature reserves and wildlife refuges. Meet the people who live here, known as Caborrojeños. You will be greeted with a welcome as warm as the Puerto Rican sun.

The municipality is home to the stunning Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, which spreads across southwestern Puerto Rico. Follow over 12 miles (19 kilometers] of walking trails through forests and across the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats to see thousands of migratory birds and rare local species.

The refuge stretches down into the Morrillos Peninsula, with some of the most dramatic landscapes in Cabo Rojo. Climb the tower of Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, a still-active beacon from the 19th century, for views of an indented limestone landscape. Wander around the paths of the peninsula and photograph the Puente Natural, a picturesque natural stone bridge on the edge of the ocean.

Cabo Rojo features some of Puerto Rico’s best beaches. Playa Sucia, also known as La Playuela, is a picture-perfect cove beach with calm water and fine sand. Playa Buye, which stands near the historic rail landmark of Tunel Guaniquilla, and Playa Boqueron both offer family fun and watersports. Escape the crowds on the south side of peaceful Combate Beach, known for its warm, crystal clear waters.

Stay in the town center of Cabo Rojo to explore the sights. The Museo de los Proceres celebrates the region’s heritage. Relax in the Plaza Ramon Emeterio, an outdoor social space that frequently hosts musical events. Visit the Church of San Miguel Arcangel, an 18th-century church with a history linked to slave emancipation.

Drive to Cabo Rojo from Eugenio Maria de Hostos Airport in Mayagüez, which is about 14 miles (23 kilometers) away. Come to Cabo Rojo in winter to see the flocks of migratory birds that arrive in the wildlife refuge or stay in September to partake in the festival of the town’s patron saint.
