Novices and superstar skiers alike are drawn to the awesome scenery and varied runs of Aspen’s prime winter sports location.

The soft, rolling slopes of Buttermilk, together with one of the world’s best park and pipe facilities, make this mountain extremely unique. Buttermilk has hosted the Winter X Games for 13 years in a row, but the mountain is also home to long, easier routes that bring maximum enjoyment to newcomers. The diverse selection of pleasant runs available at the popular destination brings groups of every ability. So whether you’re a professional or a first-time skier, grab your gear and hit the slopes.

Learn to ski on the green runs with teachers who’ll show you how to develop your skills. Graduate to the blue slopes, such as Buckskin and Big Face Hollow, which run the length of the mountain through coniferous woodland. These lengthy trails make Buttermilk an exceptionally gratifying place to pick up the basics.

Seasoned experts can find challenge on black runs, such as Jacob’s Ladder, which offers thrills for braver visitors. Board the lift at Tiehack and choose from a selection of advanced routes back down the mountain.

Two terrain parks lie on the slopes of Buttermilk, containing pipes and jumps for people who like to catch air on their way down a mountain. Try your first tricks at S3 Park before showing off in the more demanding Buttermilk Park.

Aspen and its surrounding areas transform in summer, changing from a winter wonderland to a destination for trekking and other summer sports. Hike along mountain trails or look down upon the slopes from a gondola ride. As the snow melt fills the rivers, opportunities for whitewater rafting abound. In the evening, enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of concerts in the open air, which are held throughout the season.

The slopes of Buttermilk Mountain are conveniently located near Aspen airport. Visit in ski season between December and April. If you’d rather watch the experts before trying it yourself, be a spectator at the Winter X Games in January. Return in the summer to enjoy all the warm-weather beauty and thrills throughout Aspen Snowmass.
