I loved the location of this hotel. The reception staff though was a bit cold when we arrived, not very welcoming just like meh to us. But the other staff like the gentlemen who help carry our bags up to our rooms, the cleaning staff and the breakfast staff were all so warm and exceptional to us at all times. The room itself was a bit dusty and outdated. One afternoon we came in from a tour and were covered in sweat and dust and wanted a nice cold shower but no water in the sinks or shower head so we had to let reception know and wait about 30 mins til it got resolved. The breakfast was ok, maybe a few more fruit, bread, cheeses and salad options would’ve been nice.

It is definitely a very good choice for the price. I will most likely stay at the same place next time. The only problem was that the wifi in my room was somewhat spotty. When it was very weak, I had to go outside of the room to get proper wifi (there was a chair there so that helped a little...).

I had booked this particular hotel as the hotel website and Expedia website advised that it had a restaurant and bar lounge. In fact it does not therefore my intention to have a relaxing drink at the bar and socialise and sit at the restaurant were not met. The hotel has outsourced the restaurant next door BUT it is not the same. The hotel AND Expedia are still advertising this amenities!!! The staff in general are courteous and I was allowed to have a shower and freshen up before my evening flight.

Great location
The Diplomat is in a great location five minutes walk from the Gateway of India. Nice Indian breakfast at 8 a.m. and you can be on the ferry to Elephants Island at 9. The room had a very effective spinning ceiling fan and was everything you'd expect .. clean, tidy, comfortable. And ALL relatively inexpensive.

I stayed at the Diplomat hotel for seven nights. In general, I found the reviews I read before booking this hotel to be accurate; that is, that the hotel is rundown but the location is convenient for getting around Colaba. Some comments to add to the mix: First, the staff are generally nice and helpful. The cleaning staff were very accommodating and the restaurant staff remembered my room number and tea/eggs order every day. The front desk staff were professional and let me check-in early. The hotel does not have a concierge and so I went to higher-end hotels to ask for advise about sightseeing and making travel plans. When hailing taxis, I found staff at the Diplomat to be helpful giving directions to drivers, although they didn't request that drivers use their meters, so be prepared to pay a bit extra. Second, there is a nightclub/lounge underneath the hotel and it can be loud at night. I stayed on the second floor and while it didn't bother me every night, there were times when it gave me a headache. The club closes at 1am during the week. Overall, the Diplomat was pricier than I am used to paying for a hotel of this quality, but Mumbai is an expensive city for hotels and there are not many quality mid-range options in Colaba.

Centrally located. My room overlooked the gardens of the Taj Mahal Hotel. View very relaxing to peer out from . Even though I informed the hotel that I was not able to arrive on the booked date due to flight issues, they nevertheless charged me for both days.

A bit tired but the staff are very helpful
I stayed at the Diplomat for four nights. One of them was New Year's Eve, so let's not complain about the noise. On the next night, I realised that though I had been upgraded to a 'better' room it was still close to the road and was next door to the function room. I asked to change to a standard but a quieter room, and it was fine. Sure, the hotel is showing its age and is a bit tatty, but it's in virtually the same place as the Taj (one street back) and the staff are really helpful, which is not always the case in India, and is a massive plus.

Not the Taj, but not too bad
The Diplomat is one of those Indian hotels that must have been pretty swish when it opened about 40 years ago, but which are looking pretty tired as the years advance. The paintwork is scuffed, the marble is a bit battered - you know ... But it basically works. The air-con is effective, the rooms (I've been in two) are clean and - best of all, the staff are friendly and reasonably effective. They voluntarily upgraded me to a 'de luxe' room - but it was on the street and next to the hotel's reception room, so I asked to move to a smaller, quieter room. It's at the back so you can't hear the beeping traffic (partly because it's next to a plant machine, but that's a constant low roar and so bearable). So although the Diplomat is a bit down-at-heel, and is next to the Taj only physically (it's on the next street back from the waterfront and faces the Taj's Starbucks) it is actually a quite satisfactory modest hotel, and is in a very good situation in downtown Mumbai.

I love it and will be back. The room was well furnished and everything worked. The ceiling fan couldn't adjust the speed, but I love it. All I was missing was a hair dryer! The location in South Mumbai cannot be beat and the staff really helped me out as my flight was later and they kept the bags. Great people!

The Diplomatic Diplomat
Staff was very helpful with my travel needs. Layout is strange, so I often got lost inside the hotel. Elevators often didn't work. Room very noisy because there is also a social club in the hotel.

Good location, not so good hotel
It's very close to the Gateway, just a min walk, and right next to the Taj Mahal as well. Rooms are not very clean, seems to be a very old hotel and everything is outdated - TV/AC etc. The room is spacious enough. Food served at breakfast is not good. Not worth the price.

Hotel is in an Excellent location. Just opposite The Taj Palace. Very nice neighborhood. Walking distance to almost all the famous sight seeing places. Causeway (shopping street) is right a the back of the hotel - 5mins walk. I did my own walking tour - using Google Maps & Waze. Loads of places to have good food in this area. Social (next to Diplomat Hotel) is a popular hangout! Further down the road, The Table is a nice place too but pricy! Head over to Havana Cafe - Cheap, good food, good environment, friendly staff & great drinks!

When we went in the staff was courteous and welcoming, our check-in took longer than expected, it seemed that the people who were at the reception were confused about which room to give to us, i didn't see a lot of other people so I was not sure what was the confusion about. After some time we got checked in and were showed the way to our room. The room was alright with 2 queen beds and 1 bath which had a shower and not a tub. I was expecting a tub but well we were going to be there for just 1 night so I didn't bother complaining. We had a small fridge under our TV which we could use for chilling the water, which was very helpful as the weather in Mumbai is no joke in April. We also ate dinner that we got from their kitchen and it was a good meal, the food was tasty, warm and the meat (mutton) was well cooked and soft. The food was brought to the room quite quickly. The next day started out a bit iffy though, when I went to the shower the shower was clogged, there was one person who had been to the shower before me, not sure what caused the clogging though. I was not able to find any plunger in the bathroom which was annoying. The staff was prompt to send someone within 15 minutes with a plunger who unclogged with bathroom and finally I was able to take a shower. Checkout was quick and the staff allowed us to keep our luggage inside and collect it later.

Nice hotel in city center behind Taj Hotel.
Staying in this hotel made things very easy in regards to transport facilities, shopping etc. as everything I required was available nearby.
