Gradara is an Italian town and municipality in the Province of Pesaro e Urbino in Le Marche. This corner of Italy has impressive ancient constructions, such as the medieval walls surrounding the city. In a double line, the imposing walls around Gradara are some of the best-preserved structures of their type in Le Marche region. This fortification was built in the 14th century and has spectacular towers and battlements used during ancient wars.
Stroll along the main street of Gradara to go through the city gates and find other remarkable creations, including the Palazzo Rubini Vesin. This elegant brick building from the beginning of the 18th century houses exhibits of modern art.
Continue wandering along the main street to reach Gradara’s famous castle, which has an impressive polygonal tower. Visit this famous building and discover the place immortalized by the renowned Italian poet Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy). This book is considered one of the greatest works of literature of all time. The Inferno (Hell), one of the parts of the book, has an episode about two lovers called Paolo and Francesca (based on the real-life person Francesca da Rimini). It is believed that the tragic murder of the lovers took place in the Gradara Castle in 1289. Inside the castle find valuable altarpieces, frescoes and furniture from the 15th century.
Stroll around the exterior of the castle and fortress to reach the Lovers’ Path. From this quiet walkway enjoy views of Gradara’s landscape. In this area you can also find the Teatro dell'Aria, an environmental educational park dedicated to falconry, the training of falcons and other birds of prey.
