Attend an open-air music show or other performance at this seafront plaza, or visit when nothing is scheduled to admire the unique fountain.
Piazzale Roma is one of the highlights of Riccione’s wonderful seafront area, which draws many sun-seeking visitors each year. Located at the heart of the action, this pretty square is a great place to get oriented as you start your exploration of the town and its long stretch of beaches. Come at just the right time and you may also get to see a concert or other live performance here.
Despite its name containing the word “piazzale,” meaning “large square,” the Piazzale Roma is, in fact, circular. Find it by looking for its distinctive patterned yellow, red and gray paving, laid out in a sun-like shape. The square’s other special feature is its unusual fountain, which was designed by artist Tonino Guerra. The fountain is named “il bosco della pioggia,” meaning Rainforest Fountain. Look at it carefully and you will see how the six twisted, dark green pillars around the fountain do indeed conjure images of a jungle of some kind.
Visit Riccione in the summer and you may be lucky enough to see a show in the square. Both musical performances and sporting events are held here regularly throughout the peak season. The sea provides a wonderful background to these events.
Find many of Riccione’s top attractions nearby. Walk south for 5 minutes to the beautiful Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art Villa Franceschi. Just a half-hour walk south is the fantastic Aquafan waterpark, known throughout Europe for its vast size, dazzling array of slides and attractions and regular evening events, live music shows and club nights.
Spend an afternoon wandering along the seafront, enjoying not only Piazzale Roma but the rest of the sights along the way. Explore the promenade that stretches for almost 2 miles (3 kilometers) and does not allow cars. Pause to sit on one of the benches scattered along its length and enjoy the beautiful sea views.
