Port Angeles

This attractive city is a gateway to the wild northwest and a worthy destination in itself, with a bustling marina and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Port Angeles is the perfect base from which to explore the wild and untamed wonderland of the Pacific Northwest. Take daytrips to Olympic National Park, relax on sandy beaches or simply enjoy the cafés and restaurants near the City Pier.

The city is located between the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Begin by exploring downtown where the streets are a focal point for art and sculpture, much of which was erected outdoors as part of the ART on the Town project. Regularly changing exhibitions of local art can be found at the Fine Arts Centre.

The Port Angeles harbour is a constant hub of activity. Sit and watch vessels docking and departing from the busy harbour against the backdrop of the Olympic peaks. While in the waterfront area, visit the Olympic Coast Discovery Centre to learn about Port Angeles' maritime history and local underwater habitats.

Opportunities for outdoor activities abound. Rent a bicycle and explore the miles of paved pathways on the Discovery Trail, easily accessed from downtown Port Angeles. As you pedal along, you’ll encounter vistas of snow-topped peaks and thick forests, as well as calm lakes and the roaring ocean. Comb the sands of Hollywood Beach, rent a kayak and hit the water, then picnic on the shore. Thrill-seeking travellers can find many popular surfing spots less than an hour’s drive from the city.

The Salt Creek Recreation Area is another popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and is just a 25-minute drive from downtown Port Angeles. Hike through forests, watch for whales from rocky bluffs and explore the remains of World War II-era Camp Hayden.

A little further west from the Salt Creek Recreation Area is Crescent Beach, a popular place to camp, with views to Vancouver Island.

Port Angeles is easily accessible by car from the cities of Olympia, Tacoma and Seattle or from the scenic highway running along the Pacific coast around Olympic National Park. Ferry transportation is also available between Downtown Port Angeles and Victoria, Canada.
