Toulouse City-Centre Travel Guide

Toulouse
Saint Etienne Cathedrale featuring street scenes, a sunset and a city
Admire the artistic flair and marvel at the unspoiled architecture in the Pink City’s core on the banks of the Garonne River.

The Toulouse City Center is an active hub known for its youthful student ambiance, cultural complexes and scenic views along the Garonne River. It is marked by large, spacious plazas with well-preserved medieval and Renaissance structures left untouched during the world wars. People-watch from the various bars, cafés and teahouses in this central district.

Enjoy the views of the city center from the Prairie des Filtres park on the western side of the Garonne. This riverside grassy mound is popular with the city’s many students and sunbathers on clear afternoons. Cross the river via the medieval Pont Neuf, known for its asymmetrical arches. See the bridge at night, when the underside of its arches is illuminated in romantic light.

Stroll along the Quai de la Daurade riverside walkway, where artists and performers gather and work. Take a river cruise or relax at a café by the water.

Wander through the charming alleys of the city center for a sense of the local culture. Among the highlights is the Paul Dupuy Museum, which contains a fascinating collection of artistic objects and graphic arts dating from the Middle Ages to 1939. Visit other intriguing institutions including the Museum of Old Toulouse, the Museum of the Augustins and the David Léger Sculpture Workshop.

Watch a theatrical performance in the cozy amphitheater of the Grand Rond theater and have a drink at its elegant bar. A little north is the impressive Place du Capitole. On this eastern side of this square is the enormous Capitole building. Take a tour of its majestic halls and museum exhibits.

Toulouse’s City Center runs along the eastern bank of the Garonne River in the heart of Toulouse. Arrive at one of the many metro stops that pass through this district, such as Capitole, Esquirol and Carmes. Make sure to see the adjacent areas of Carmes, Le Busca and St-Cyprien.
