------- Split is the biggest and most important city of Dalmatia. It is also the administrative center of the Split-Dalmatia region. It is based on a small peninsula on the east coast of the Balkan Peninsula and the Adriatic Sea. Split is Croatia's second largest city (after Zagreb). Split entered the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 1979.
