Royal Opera House Muscat

Muscat showing theatre scenes, heritage architecture and night scenes
From ballet, jazz and opera to luxury shopping and ornamental gardens, you’ll find plenty to do at one of Oman’s premier cultural centers.

Some of the world’s biggest names in entertainment grace the stage of the Royal Opera House Muscat. Visit this magnificent venue to enjoy an evening of music or dance. Browse upscale retail outlets, dine on sumptuous cuisine and stroll through a formal garden. Commissioned by the Sultan of Oman, the Royal Opera House Muscat opened in 2011 and has since provided outstanding performing arts in Oman.

Purchase tickets for a show to get the complete opera house experience. Take a seat with up to 1,100 others in the audience, appreciate the auditorium’s excellent acoustics and personal technology devices and marvel at the opulent décor. Events run year round and range from well-known ballets and operas to family-friendly musicals, jazz concerts, orchestra recitals and traditional Omani dances. Previous performers include Andrea Bocelli, Michel Legrand, Gilberto Gil and Placido Domingo.

Go behind the scenes on a guided tour of the venue. With the assistance of a knowledgeable guide you’ll learn about its architectural style, artistic features, history and innovation. See how the auditorium can shift from concert to theater mode via the switch of buttons. A highlight of the tour is the exhibit of unusual musical instruments.

Look for free events, which might include outdoor concerts or education and outreach activities. Learn the Argentine tango or bring kids to interactive art and music appreciation classes.

The opera house complex includes the Opera Galleria, a shopping mall with cafés, restaurants and more than 50 cosmetic, fashion and jewelry stores. Indulge in afternoon tea at Richoux, a branch of an upscale café first established in London in 1909. The landscaped garden has colorful flower displays, perfectly groomed lawns and topiary hedges.

Find the venue in the affluent residential neighborhood Shati Al Qurum. On-site parking is available. Muscat International Airport is about a 20-minute drive west.

Tours of the Royal Opera House Muscat are offered on a daily basis and have a fee. Buy tickets at the box office or online. Opera Galleria is open daily. Visit the opera house’s official website for more information and an up-to-date schedule of events. Note that business dress is required for performances.
