Padmanabhapuram Palace showing a castle

See fine architectural woodwork, grand stone halls and traditional Keralan weapons in this former epicenter of the Travancore kingdom.

The magnificent Padmanabhapuram Palace is an ancient wooden palace from where monarchs used to rule Travancore. It is located in the picturesque lowlands below the Veli Hills, and is rich in architectural beauty and collections of royal Keralan relics.

The teak palace was built in the late 16th century and was extended and added to over the years. Today, the palace complex encompasses 6.5 acres (2.6 hectares) and survives in stunning condition. Most of its original buildings, wells, towers and gardens are intact.

At the centre of the palace complex is the four-story king's mansion. Browse the first floor, which once held the royal treasury, and then climb the stairs to find the king's sleeping chambers. Admire an exquisite wooden bedhead, a gift from Dutch merchants. In the mansion's upper levels, see worship chambers decorated with paintings of Hindu gods and murals depicting everyday Travancore life.

Stop by the Mantrasala, the king's council chamber, to see fine Travancore woodwork. This meeting room on the first floor of the reception hall features latticed windows, hand carved chairs and a shiny black floor made using burnt coconut, egg white and charcoal. Outside, look up to the palace clock tower, which has kept time for over three centuries.

Tour the well-preserved rooms of Thai Kottaram, the Queen Mother's palace. This is the oldest construction in the complex. Examine the large murals on the third floor and then spend a few quiet moments in the building’s inner courtyard.

Nearby, is the Padmanabhapuram Palace’s granite hall, the Nataksala. This arena was the joy of Travancore king, Maharaja Swathi Thirunal, who commissioned a wide range of music and dance shows here.

As you make your way through palace chambers, browse exhibits of ancient artifacts. Observe delicate Chinese ceramics, polished mirrors and an extensive set of swords. There is also a gallery of paintings that depict scenes from Travancore Kingdom’s history.

Padmanabhapuram Palace is located approximately 30 miles (50 kilometres) southeast of Thiruvananthapuram. It is open every day except Monday and there is an admission fee.
