Any visitor to Innsbruck won’t fail to notice that there’s little regularity in the quaint architecture of the Old Town, but even in this sea of odd shapes there’s one building that somehow manages to look especially irregular. Jutting out at every odd angle, and with its large grey walls boldly punctuated by shutters painted in the colours of the Austrian flag, the Ottoburg restaurant stands tall and proud inviting passers-by to come in and explore its carved wooden chambers – and, of course, to sample some lovely food.
The building was built towards the end of the 15th century as part of Innsbruck Castle and has a claim to being the oldest standing edifice in the city, although no one has come up with any conclusive proof of this alleged fact. It has been open as an eatery since 1745.
While the exterior certainly grabs your attention, the interior decor in each of the four rooms here is remarkable too. Ornate wooden panelling, golden chandeliers and intricately carved neo-gothic furniture come together to create ordered parlours that bear twinges of baroque decadence. Booking is practically essential here as the Ottoburg is immensely popular. While you’re at it, try and get a table by a window so you can enjoy the views of the Old Town.
The menu is mainly influenced by traditional Austrian cuisine, featuring a variety of meat dishes and dumplings. More cosmopolitan and contemporary flavours are also on offer.
The Ottoburg is open for lunch and dinner every day except Monday. It’s easy to find and is reachable by bus or on foot. Book in advance to avoid disappointment, especially at Christmas, Easter or other holidays when it’s likely to be very busy.
