While the rooms are very basic but clean, the rest of the hotel is in a sorry state. This is a two star hotel, adjust your expectations if you book it!

The pros: Location close to lots of things to do and restaurants. Clean and safe room. Friendly staff, you can store your luggage before check in. Helpful with providing directions to airport via the subway. The cons: not handicapped accessible- front steep 4-5 stairs. We got stuck in the elevator 3 times, had to push alarm and call front desk for help. Internet doesn’t work well at all, nor the television. Hotel room had one easily accessible outlet and one in bathroom. Not counter or sink space, everything kept falling on floor. Paper thin walls, woke up each morning at 6am (on vacation!) to crying baby next door.

Staff were extremely helpful. Hotel is a bit dated, however, is a superb location if you want easy Subway/Rail and Bus options for exploring. Very close to Times Square, however, quiet considering. Lots of tourist and activities within walking distance. A good place to stay for seeing a Broadway show

Decent hotel at an amazing location. Incredibly quiet in the room compared to the cacophonous Times Square environment. Older building but what can we expect right? Overall a good stay.

Hoping they are still working on the property, as it could be so cool. Need to work on the strong cleaner smell, it's quite offputting. Great to know it's clean but the smell isn't good. Also, some pictures or more homey things in the rooms. Hotel has all one needs for sure, and the staff was super nice. But the icing would be some decorating and more things in the rooms to make them comfy and "match" the coolness of the old lobby,

I really liked the personable front desk staff. They are always nice and ready to help. I had forgotten a luggage at the hotel and the staff was very helpful. They he property is very close to Times Square but is on the quiet side and is clean.

Very dated. Close to amenities. Roo..was clean but everything else including common ares is VERY dated. Asked staff a question and got a back habded answer while looking away. Very unenthusiastic. I woupd not stay here again.

Older hotel but with lots of charm! Room was very nice and clean. I was there on business and so did not spend much time there but to sleep. Easy walk to Subway on 6th Ave, can walk to a lot of tourist attractions very easily! Location was perfect to where my office was located and activities we had planned.

Would like to start by saying the location is great, you are less than a block away from Time Square and although the area is noisy and busy, the hotel itself was quiet. If you need a hub to move around the city with ease this is your place, in addition the staff was great and accommodating. Everything was very clean as well. Now, the bad part, the bed and mattress were awful, like the worse we have ever experienced, not the only the bed rocks and squeaks, the mattress was hard and at the same time flimsy, if a 120 pounds person can make it bend to the side, means there was no support whatsoever, and let’s not talk about the pillows, just as bad. When traveling a good bed to have a restful night is extremely important and let’s clarify we didn’t expect a luxurious place but we did a good comfortable bed; for that reason we wouldn’t come back to this hotel.

The location is probably one of its highlights if you’ve never been to NYC and you want to do a lot of touristy things. It’s very close to most transits, walkable to Time Square, Bryant Park, lots to see. However the building/amenities are lacking, not a unique problem in a lot of NYC’s hotel unless you spend $$$$. Our bigger problem is the front desk told us cleaning wouldn’t come unless we put out a sign, but the cleaning crew knocked on our door at 8 or 9am next morning anyway. Then the second morning the staff/maintenance people were pounding up stairs at 8:30am, could not sleep in. The shower also run out of hot water after about 10mins so that was very unpleasant.

Joey was wonderful as was the kind and chic hotel manager, Margaret Lis. Both of them made our trip much more enjoyable than we expected. Also, the maintenance staff and housekeeping staff were welcoming and kind. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Manhattan.

Clean, great staff & location. Great choice if you're in NY for the theatre....all theatres are in walking distance. Great reasonable rate. Have been staying here for years.

Given the price and the location, the hotel was certainly more than adequate. My room was small, but that is expected in midtown hotels. The lobby area is pleasant but "dated". Still there was a charm to it. The location is fantastic and the staff was very nice- check-in was easy and courteous.

It’s very very basic. Our $400 room on a random Tuesday in May had no carpet, no fridge, no microwave, no coffee maker, no ice maker in the entire building, no art or curtains or anything but the very bare basics. It was clean enough, sure. But the mattress was an old hard foam mattress on the squeakiest box spring I’ve ever experienced. The only redeeming quality was the staff was friendly, the room was clean, and I could walk to our broadway show within 7-8 minutes.

You simply cannot beat the price and location. Yes, it’s outdated and very simple, but this property is perfect for a short stay in the middle of NYC when you aren’t looking for any unnecessary frills or expensive add-ons. The staff was great, the room was clean, everything worked, and we were very happy.

The is a older hotel in good condition a bit dated. but older hotels have very thick walls and floors. Super quiet no City noises. And the cook eatery is next door. A budget friendly place to stay.

This Was a cute boutique hotel. Perfect location. I wasted so much food from local restaurants because I could not bring it back to room lacking a mini fridge and microwave . The so called bar lounge should be turned into a little coffee shop with maybe some bagels or croissants to sell or free even better to get the day started. I would stay again just for location alone.

Location! Location! Location! We stayed 2 nights and had a jammed pack schedule of events. We felt comfortable and safe the entire time! Our room was very clean! The staff were friendly and accommodating. You can grab a cup of coffee from Gumptions or Starbucks right across the street. Hit up Connolly’s Pub & Restaurant next door. Within walking distance of many amazing Broadway shows. Highly recommend!!!

Perfect stay at St James. Fabulous location, easy to get around anywhere. Deli next door and walgreens just across the road. The only negative about this hotel is it could do with a little fridge in the room, apart from that this place is a great place to stay. Very clean and friendly. Would definitely stay here again

Loved the staff at the front desk especially the guy who was always so bubbly and always cracking jokes. I appreciate that they had a place to store your luggage while it was time to wait for check in or leave for our flight. I also loved the room space! Did not feel like I was staying at a crammed NYC hotel. However I do wish they had a refrigerator and microwave in the room or at least in the main lobby. I think overall this hotel was great! I would totally come back!!!! Last but not least time square is around the corner. Boy was I there every night at 11:57 to see the daily art of a specific artist on the screens.
