The Nasher Sculpture Centre in the Dallas Arts District is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. A veritable oasis of calm, this prestigious art venue houses the cream of modern and contemporary sculpture. Founded by cultural philanthropists Raymond and Patsy Nasher, the centre is home to a unique collection of artwork, acquired by the couple over the course of 50 years.
Occupying 5,100 square metres, the building was designed by award-winning architect, Renzo Piano. The architecture of the building comprises a barrel-vaulted glass ceiling and walls that are clad in Italian Travertine tiles. These unique features are specifically designed to optimise the serenity of the space, allowing the visitor to enjoy a more wholesome experience. Glass façades bookend the main spaces, controlling the light and creating a seamless continuity between the interior gallery and the exterior gardens.
The interior collections are an art lover's dream. Roy Lichtenstein’s “Peace Through Chemistry”, Joan Miró’s “Woman With a Mirror” and Anthony Gormley’s “Quantum Cloud” give an indication of the calibre of sculpture awaiting contemplation.
The exterior landscape is full of weeping willows and cedar elms, which jostle for space between pathways and fountains. 25 exterior sculptures are displayed on a rotational basis and consist of works from the Nasher collection as well as specially selected pieces from other museums and art galleries. Commissioned specifically for the sculpture garden, James Turrell’s ‘”Tending” is one of the highlights of this space where peace and tranquillity abound.
Ideally located adjacent to the Dallas Museum of Art as well as the Asian Crow Museum, it’s easy to slip the Nasher Sculpture Centre into your itinerary. An on-site café provides refreshments and the centre’s gift shop is the perfect place to pick up that special souvenir. Get the most out of your visit by allowing for a few hours – you won’t be disappointed!
