Holding over 60,000 works of art from the last century, the National Museum of Modern Art (NOMA) is a giant on the European art scene. In this wonderful location, you can admire masterpieces from the fauvist, cubist, surrealist and abstract expressionist movements. And you can marvel at the stunning Pompidou Centre, located at the Place Beaubourg.
Designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rodgers, the Pompidou Centre offers a striking contrast to the traditional and elegant façades of other galleries across Paris. When it first opened in 1977, as with many new concepts, it was greeted with fierce criticism for its unusual appearance, with its water pipes and air-conditioning units visible on the outside of the building to offer more free space indoors. However, it is now a much-loved symbol of modern Paris.
The building’s library is spread across the first three floors, whilst MOMA exhibits can be explored on the fourth and fifth floors. On the fourth floor, there are works from the mid-1960s to the present day. If you venture up a level, you’ll encounter works by artists that date further back including Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali and Joan Miró, Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock. In addition to the permanent collections, you may come across a temporary exhibition, which will a something extra to your visit.
Here you'll also find dozens of Picasso works, making this an ideal place for a combined visit with Paris's National Picasso Museum. Explore the archive of famous photographer Man Ray's contact prints and negatives.
There is so much more to see and do in the Pompidou Centre. The building has a dedicated space for children, as well as ICRAM, a centre for music and acoustic research. There are also performance halls, a cinema, and a viewing area on the sixth floor where you can enjoy great views across Paris.
The National Museum of Modern Art opens daily except on Tuesdays and on 1st May. It is free to get into the permanent exhibits, though the temporary exhibits usually charge a small fee. You can find light snacks at the café, and also explore the bookshop here. The museum is close to major bus, train and subway stations.
