Haverfordwest is a vibrant andbustling country town with an eclectic range of activities for the wholefamily. The county town of Pembrokeshire, Haverfordwestis situated in the Welsh countryside on the west banks of the River Cleddau,not far from the world-famous PembrokeshireCoast National Park

Here you could visit Picton Castle,a lovely historical monument set in majestic gardens. Wear the kids out at ClerkenhillAdventure Farm, or head to Haverford Castle,a wonderful example of a Norman architecture. With a number of shopping centres,an animated nightlife and plenty of outdoor sports too, you’ll find there is noshortage of things to do.

History of Haverfordwest 

Haverfordwest’s location onthe River Cleddau has made it a strategic settlement since Roman times. Thetown has seen wars, sieges and even the Black Death, which struck the town in12th century and wiped out half of its population. Today, Haverfordwestis a popular base for hikers adventuring on the PembrokeshireCoastal Path and nearby National Park. 

Castles in Haverfordwest

Haverfordwest Castle is a crumbling Norman ruin, which has survived for over 900 years at the centre of thetown. Pembrokeshire Castle and Wiston Castle are also just a short distanceaway. However, perhaps the most impressive is Picton Castle, which offers adelightful mixture of architectural styles. Summer visits promise a particularlyrewarding burst of scent and colour, in safe surrounds where the kids can roamfreely. 

Family Activities in Haverfordwest

For something a little more hands on, why not pay a visit tothe Clerkenhill Adventure Farm? This adventureground has a huge park for the kids, complete with go-karts, swings, and a pet zoo where smaller children can get up close and personal with the farmanimals in a safe environment. For the older children there are some greatadventure trails and the quirky 18-basket Frisbee golf course issurprisingly good fun. It’s a hit even with the grown-ups!

"Comfortable, quiets and spacious rooms. Very welcoming & cheerful, helpful staff. The Mariner's is perfectly placed to explore the town on foot. I don't normally have an evening meal when staying at The Mariner's but i did on this occasion and it was very good and piping hot."

So bad we left a day early - description is poor
"The photos do not show this place as it is. The main issue is that the bed is in a loft space - up a very steep ladder - its claustrophobic and difficult to access if your knees and ankles are not 10 years old. Couple that with it having an unexpected wood fired hot tub - and being left only 3 small ..."

The town, like many of our towns now, has suffered from the closure of shops in the high street but the buildings and courtyards are of great interest to anyone who appreciates historic buildings. We hope that it may benefit from new grants.
