The church of St. Peter and Paul is the mother church of Galatina. It overlooks St. Peter's Square in the Old Town, where once stood the Porta Maggiore, the mother church of Saints Peter and Paul is presented with a striking façade, a sign of the Baroque style, which characterizes much of the private and religious buildings of the city. The present church is the result of a reconstruction took place between the thirties and forties of the seventeenth century, at the behest of the Universitas who gave the church a prominent role compared to the other churches in the city. The earthquake of 1743 caused serious damage and, in the second half of the century, interrupted with several reconstructions. It stands on the site of a previous religious edifice. We know for sure that in 1355 you put hand to the refurbishment of an existing chapel in which it was celebrated in the rite greek. The greek remained the official language in the rites of the church until the mid-sixteenth century. The city was, in fact, considered Greek (oppidum graecorum).

Staff was excellent, very clean. However our bathroom sink was not draining properly and this was mentioned to staff on day one of our stay and it was never fixed. Also our room (201)was next door to the service room and it was very very noisey. We asked to switch rooms and we were told No.

It’s a really nice apartment in a historic building in the old Lecce. The location is very safe and convenient to explore the old town. There is also a street parking within 5 min walk, which was very helpful. Desideria is wonderful and very easy to communicate with. Would definitely recommend.
