Churches, half-timbered buildings and a former monastery that contains a university adorn this tranquil suburb, whose park stretches across the river.

As a secluded suburb in the southern limits of Essen, Werden is a hub for medieval German architecture that survived World War II. It stands out for its quaint semi-timbered cottages and narrow alleys that recall the hamlets of yesteryear. Stroll between the old-fashioned lanterns on the winding cobbled lanes that run through this Old Town area.

The crowning jewel of the area is the Werden Abbey, which today contains part of the Folkwang University of the Arts. Admire the elegant yellow façade of the main building and spot the light green spire on top of the turret of the complex. Stroll past the Baroque buildings of the abbey and speak with students about its history.

Head northwest to the town center and amble along quaint alleys that are lined with medieval buildings. Stop at a café for a hot drink in these quaint surroundings. Plenty of shops, bakeries and restaurants crowd the lively streets.

Enter the Evangelische Kirche Werden to marvel at its religious works of art and walk north for the St. Lucius Church. Nearby is the Bürgermeisterhaus concert hall, where you can attend musical recitals and talks.

Get a round of drinks at a beer garden or snack on ice cream on a grassy patch near the river. Cross the bridge to the scenic Brehminsel Park, which runs across a large island and is bordered by trees. The long history of this area dates back to the foundation of Werden Abbey in the 8th century.

Werden is tucked away on the Ruhr River in its namesake valley. Drive south from the center of Essen for less than 20 minutes or ride the S-Bahn to the Essen-Werden station. Leave your car in the large parking lot on the eastern side of the old abbey. Consider stopping off in the districts of Stadtwald, Bredeney and Rüttenscheid along the way.
