Depending on where you’re coming from, your journey to Jeddah could be simple and straightforward or it could go on forever. We've put together some useful hints that will help you start your unforgettable escape on a positive note. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• It's easy — first, pack in your passport, important documents, credit cards and vital medications. Next, you'll want some entertainment to help pass the time. A thrilling book and a laptop filled with your favourite movies are good options. If you intend to take a quick snooze, a comfy neck pillow and some earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, make room for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes so you'll hop off the plane feeling fresh as a daisy.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between air carriers, the general rule of thumb is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like screwdrivers, knives, aerosol cans and flares. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could harm passengers, such as pepper spray and guns, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your number one priority when deciding what to wear on board. Loose clothing is a sensible option, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To reduce your risk on board, drink plenty of water, consider wearing compression socks and move your legs and feet often.

Being organised before your flight will make your trip to Jeddah a breeze. Below you'll find some handy tips for a swift journey through security:

• Security personnel first need to establish that you have a valid passport and travel documents before anything else. Keep them within easy reach.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your jacket, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like coins, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as it gets closer to your turn.
• Your electronic gadgets like phones and laptops will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or hand cream, that you want to bring on board must be no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you a few precious minutes. Boots and heavy shoes are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on shoes are usually not.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
