Dear Christoph, thanks for your feedback, which I have read great surprise. It could well be that your expectations were different, but that is obviously subjective. But to call our guesthouse shabby and outdated is really not fair at all. We have invested over the last 2 years and did major maintenance and upgrades to our property. The fact that you don't like the decor in the room and claim it is from 30 years ago is again very subjective in my view not fair. Don't really understand what decor you are referring to either. I don't understand the fact that you forget to mention you had booked our cheapest and smallest room without a view and we complimentary upgraded you. Your were upgraded to a lovely much more spacious Superior Room with bathroom ensuite with bath and separate shower and the room has a lovely balcony with stunning views, but you forget to mention this. You stayed with us last Thu 21 and Fri 22 Oct and both days the weather was actually not great or rather pretty bad with lot's of rain (50mm) and strong wind. This definitely had an effect on the cleanliness of our pools overnight, but you must have noticed that the moment the weather allowed it and our staff had the chance to clean it, they did thoroughly. Our pools are cleaned on a daily basis. I am however glad that you were very happy with our staff being very accommodating. We do find it strange that you didn't mention anything on checkout when our duty manager asked if you enjoyed your stay, which you replied that you did. Maybe we could have doe something during your stay if you would have mentioned something. It is obviously a disappointment to read such a review and a rating of 4 out of 10, but we always strive to improve. So thanks again for your feedback. Kind regards, Dave & The WedgeView Team

Our pools are checked and cleaned on a daily basis, but it can happen that because of weather conditions (winds, rain or very hot sunny weather), the pool get's a little dirty, but if it does, we always attend to it asap, to make sure our guests can enjoy our pool to the fullest. It is autumn this time of the year, so I can get pretty cold outside and then of course the pool temperature will also be cold. On a nice autumn day or after we have had some nice warmer autumn days, the pool does get warmer than normal from our pool solar panels. In summer tends to make a difference of between 5-7 degrees Celsius. We will also look into a possibility of maybe adding a heat pump to her up our pool in the colder months of the year. Our access road is a gravel road and not ours but our neighbour's (farmer) but we do try to keep it accessible. But we an only advise our guests to drive slowly and enjoy the views! I did however read your review with great surprise. WedgeView is a guesthouse an not a hotel. We are indeed located in the middle of the vineyards of a working farm at the end of an 800 meter gravel road, which is the farmer’s road and not ours. Most of our guests specifically stay with us because of our location and the surrounding vineyards and because we are secluded. This is also very clearly communicated on our website and other booking websites. We do also advice our guests to pre-book their Spa bookings in advance to avoid disappointment. We would however like to apologize for the misunderstanding/miscommunication regarding availability at our Spa. I think that at the time the staff member you spoke to at first didn’t see any availability and it could well be that there was a cancellation just after you had enquired. I am certain that the staff member you spoke to did care about you and other guests. I am just glad that we were able to book you into our Spa for some relaxing treatments. I am glad to hear that you think that WedgeView is a stunning, cosy thatched house that greets you when you drive through the gates. I am not sure if you realize that you did book one of our 2 Deluxe Rooms, which are our smaller rooms, but that is why the rate for that room is also the lowest. The price you paid was R 1390.00 per night, which in GBP is approx. £ 67,00 per night in your currency. You did get what you paid for. The rooms has a king size bed, bathroom en-suite with bath and separate shower, heated towel rail, a large build-in cupboards, coffee and tea making facilities, a fully stocked mini bar, air-con and under floor heating. We serve an a la carte lunch menu every day and we serve lovely 3-course dinners on request ( to be booked 48 hours in advance) and we can serve our well-known Winelands Platters with a selection of beautiful local cheeses and cold meats, condiments and freshly baked baguette every day/evening. In winter we also have a choice of home-made soups available for you to order. Our bar prices are indeed very reasonable, especially if you compare them to the UK and other European countries. I am not sure what you mean with “ staff arrangements were bizarre”. It is indeed possible that someone in our front office or who you spoke to, had only been in the country for a couple of days, but that must have been a new Hotelschool trainee. But I am very sure that he/she was working with a colleague who has been working with us for some time and could have given you some more and probably better local advice. Our staff would normally also ask myself or my wife or any other more experienced staff to assist if he/she cannot assist with something. Our normal front office staff hours are between 7h00 in the morning and 21h00, which is probably more than you would normally find at most guesthouses in South Africa. That is one of the differences between a guesthouse and a hotel. After 21h00, we do have one of our night guards on duty and in your case there were actually 2 night guards that evening. It is the first time a guests tells us that our night guards speak very limited English, because we normally only get compliments about them. Besides the fact that they are on night duty as a night guard, they are very capable to do check-ins for late arrivals, assist our guests at the bar as barman, carry suitcases as a porter and many more things, besides looking after the guests security. I am glad to hear that you think our grounds at the guesthouse were beautiful. It is sad to hear and a pity that your stay was not to your satisfaction. I am sure we could have given you better and more information to maximize your experience at WedgeView and Stellenbosch. We do hope to welcome you a next time at WedgeView and maybe you would then book another and more spacious room. I am sure we can give the advice based on local knowledge what you are looking for.
