In Boadilla del Monte, you’ll find important works of Spanish neoclassicism, Visigoth ruins and ancient temples, and all just a stone's throw from Madrid.
Some historical references and remains found in the town suggest that the origin of Boadilla del Monte dates back to the Muslim era. In fact, one of the most emblematic religious buildings in the town, the Parish Church of San Cristóbal, is actually an ancient mosque and fortress from the 9th century. The modern church was built in the 15th century, but still preserved some Moorish touches. You won't want to miss it on your holiday in Boadilla del Monte.
Archaeological excavations at Cerro de San Babilés have uncovered a Visigoth necropolis, dating from the 6th to 8th centuries, as well as remnants of houses. Artefacts have also been found dating back to the first Iron Age, as well as huge lime kilns from medieval times. However, the hermitage of San Babilés is the most notable finding, as it’s believed to be the resting place of the patron saint of the town.
Nearby you’ll find an important monument of Madrid neoclassicism: the Palace of the Infante Don Luis. In 1764, the prince, or Infante, commissioned Ventura Rodríguez, one of the main architects of the 18th century, with its construction. The land on which the elegant building sits features a large garden area surrounded by embankments divided by Italian-style stone staircases. If you’d like to see inside, you can request a guided tour to see how the refurbishment works have restored it to its original splendour.
Thanks to cheap trips to Boadilla del Monte, you can see other neoclassical pieces by Ventura Rodríguez. For example, opposite the main gate of the palace you can see the Fuente de los Tres Caños, a fountain that dates back to the late 18th century. It used to be used as a water tank, hence its functional structure. A short distance away you’ll find another piece by the architect, a bridge over the River Nacedero.
